Cookstove & Fuels Strategy – World Bank

Project Description

Cookstove & Fuels Strategy – World Bank

The World Bank’s Energy Access Initiative is focused on driving large scale adoption of improved energy solutions in the refugee camps- and similar low-income communities- of Sub-Saharan Africa. I-DEV was engaged by the World Bank to provide global expertise on clean cooking and alternative energy products, ranging from improved cookstoves and biofuels to solar. Scope of work included visits to 4 refugee camps across East Africa, in order to conduct focus groups with target beneficiaries, interview key partners and distributors and understand market dynamics. Field visits and research uncovered a range of potential opportunities for market-based interventions, in particular for middle and upper low-income communities in camps, who have regular incomes or remittance payments from diaspora, and host communities. Full market analysis and consumer segmentation, a framework for analyzing entry into refugee communities, and pilot implementation strategy were provided to the World Bank. The World Bank also engaged I-DEV to lead a follow-on market assessment in Turkana County.
