GLOBAL ALLIANCE FOR CLEAN COOKSTOVES- DUE DILIGENCE & FUND PROCESS REVIEW
I-DEV is working closely with the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves (GACC), an international organization housed under the UN Foundation, to advise on strengthening GACC’s 3 annual challenge fund competitions that provide seed and growth capital to leading clean cookstove and eco-fuel companies around the world. In addition, I-DEV supports the GACC and selection committee by conducting due diligence for final round fund candidates.
I-DEV has advised the Asociación de Productores de Tara de San Marcos (APT), a farmers cooperative in Northern Perú, since its inception in 2007 to develop greater economic opportunity from tara. Through extensive agricultural research, in-the-field training on improved cultivation techniques, incorporation of business incentives, and establishment of a region-wide network of producers that sell to a guaranteed purchaser, I-DEV has helped APT become the largest, most successful supplier of unprocessed tara in Peru. Today, APT is over $7MM in revenues. Read the Project Tara Cajamarca Case Study.
DIRECT TRADE COFFEE SUPPLY CHAIN
I-DEV is partnering with ForesTrade and the Coffee Quality Institute, the non-profit arm of the Specialty Coffee Association of America, to build out a scalable, more efficient and transparent premium coffee supply chain that will pilot in Sumatra, Indonesia and then be replicated around the world. I-DEV began buy conducting the first-ever Direct Trade Coffee Market Study to assess current and future market demand and industry dynamics. I-DEV is currently in the process of perfecting the supply chain strategy before rolling out the program on-the-ground.
I-DEV is working with Playa Viva Resorts and the Opportunity Collaboration Conference to help develop and grow 2 local farmer-based organic cooperatives outside of Zihuatanejo, Mexico: one, an artisanal salt coop that works the same ancient salt plains used by the Aztecs, and the other, an organic produce coop. I-DEV conducted a best practices/SWOT analysis and will present at the Opportunity Collaboration Conference on ways in which conference attendees can assist these two cooperatives to scale and thrive.
LOCAL FOOD SERVICES SUPPLY CHAIN DEVELOPMENT
I-DEV is advising a large food services provider on developing a local fresh produce supply chain in Northern Peru. Currently, this company sources its produce from the Peruvian Coast, a 20+ hour drive away. By developing a local supply chain that adheres to strict sanitation and quality standards, I-DEV is helping its client reduce costs while simultaneously empowering the local community. I-DEV has also recommended the development of a local food processing facility that will free up existing bottlenecks and enable locals to produce premium packaged goods.
SANITATION AS A BUSINESS (SAAB)
I-DEV was selected by Water For People, a global water and sanitation NGO, to assist in the launch of their global Sanitation as a Business (SAAB) program in Blantyre, Malawi. Financed by a Gates Foundation grant, this is the first genuine attempt at establishing a global ecosystem of sanitation-focused SMEs. I-DEV was hired by Water For People to help the NGO and its group of local entrepreneurs to launch these businesses. I-DEV’s work included a “big picture” assessment of the business environment in Blantyre, a thorough analysis of the target low-income markets, and business strategy advice for the entrepreneurs.
