Building Community-Based Tourism in the Peruvian Amazon

Project Description

Building Community-Based Tourism in the Peruvian Amazon

I-DEV was engaged by the Bernard Van Leer Foundation to implement on previous recommendations to create scalable impact for women and children in Peru (See BVLF Peru Impact Investment Fund Strategy). In November, 2014, I-DEV began Phase 2 of recommendations to strengthen the tourism sector in Belen, Iquitos, one of the poorest regions in Peru, yet the third most popular international tourist destination. This region in the Peruvian Amazon is known for its unique floating markets, former rubber industry glory days and ongoing conflict over increasing oil & gas activity that causes socio-economic tensions.
